Ice Hack 2027 Hack the lamppost
A day and a night of building the next generation of street lighting: lampposts that sense the air, the snow, the ice and the traffic around them. Data and sensors are provided – bring your curiosity.

The challenge
Every lamppost can become a sensor station
Lampposts already stand where we move: along streets, footpaths and cycle lanes, by schools and in squares. They have power, they stand tall and they are everywhere in the municipality.
Add a sensor and every post starts telling us something about its surroundings. The question is what to measure – and what good the information does once we have it.
What would you want your street to know?
What can be measured?
A few ideas to start with
You choose what to build. This is just a beginning.
Air quality
Particles and exhaust street by street, not just in one place.
Snow depth
Ploughing can start where the snow actually is.
Ice
Surface temperature and moisture warn before the footpath turns into a rink.
Noise
Sound levels around the clock show where action is needed.
Traffic
How many vehicles pass, how fast, and at what time of day.
Pedestrians and cyclists
Which routes are used – and which are still used in winter?
Light
Dim when nobody is there, brighten when someone comes.
Local weather
Wind, precipitation and temperature block by block.
The toolbox
